Why and how to benefit from walk-around

If your company deals with budgetary obstacles, would you begin from direct cost-cutting or from improving the results? Which way is quicker? Which one may have higher chances to solve your today obstacles and cause minor obstacles in the future?

Although cutting the expenses as a direct solution with quick results is prevalent, perhaps we should at least evaluate indirect solutions as well. Imagine an alternative solution that improves the efficiency or performance of your assets while reducing associated risks. This solution does not directly subscribe to cost-cutting but perhaps meets your company sustained objectives and generates more profit in the long run. Should it be considered?

This paper tries to demonstrate one of these indirect solutions, which brings sustainably added value for companies in a relatively short period of time with little investments and proper management support. In this paper I call this solution “Basic/Standard care”, but you may find other names like walk-around [1] and essential care [2] as well. While Basic care activities are simple activities (like cleaning, inspection, smelling, sensing) applicable for a vast majority of the assets, Standard care activities require tools and may be applicable for a smaller set of equipment. The solution is neither new nor invented by Stork, but the way Stork uses it to fit with RCM/FMEA studies, generates even more added value while meeting the company’s sustained objectives. Let’s begin with a briefing in theory and move into the case study afterwards.
