James Gorry has been announced as the keynote speaker for the REACH Beyond Zero Annual Safety Awards 2013, which takes place at the Grand Hotel Huis Ter Duin on Thursday 20 June.

James, who was a welder/fabricator by trade, lost the use of his legs following a preventable industrial incident. He now specialises in high impact safety presentations based on his life up until the incident and the effect it has had on him and his family since.

In James’ own words he describes how the accident occurred:

“On October 15th 2005 at a galvanising plant in Dublin I was asked to repair a damaged roof. That morning we had completed the first stage of the process successfully and had taken down the safety gear moving it down site to prepare for another day’s work. Getting back onto the roof to inspect the next day’s work and knowing the roof I was getting up on, I was not wearing any safety equipment and in hindsight I know that that was not the right way to do it. Slipping in the gutter I fell into the roof and twenty six feet to the ground below. That is the day that changed my life forever.”

And his efforts are now focused on helping to ensure others don’t make the same mistake:

“Health and safety is an imperative that applies to all organizations, employers, employees and self-employed people. Continuous efforts to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement systems that will reduce the likelihood of incident and injury in the workplace should be something that we strive for on a daily basis”

James follows Jennifer Deeney and Jason Anker as powerful and personal speakers who have presented at previous REACH Beyond Zero Annual Safety Award ceremonies.

Mike Mann, SVP – Global HSSEQ, said: “We are very pleased to have James as the keynote speaker for this year’s REACH Beyond Zero Annual Safety Awards. James’ experience serves as a stark reminder about how one wrong decision at the worksite has the potential to change your life forever. His personal story and insight  will have a positive impact on all those who attend and help us continue to make safety our priority at all times.”
