What is your name and role at Stork?

My name is Bill Abbott and I am the Group Scaffold Manager at Stork in Aberdeen. I manage the Aberdeen Scaffold Yard Team who are nominated for the REACH Beyond Zero Award for Best Safety Performance.

Why do you believe your team was shortlisted?

I believe we were shortlisted because of our outstanding safety record here at the Scaffolding Yard. In the year 2012 we handled approximately 8,000 tonnes of scaffolding equipment without so much as an Elastoplast being handed out!

How did you and the team feel once you learned you had been shortlisted?

I was extremely proud when I was informed that the team had got down to the last three. I realized of course the size of the Stork team globally so it’s a terrific achievement. The guys in the yard are thrilled to be recognised in this way. Here’s hoping we win it now!

What does safety mean to you and your team?

Safety to me and my workforce is a way of life. It’s not just at work it also stretches into our home lives and outside in to the wider world. It’s not just today, it’s everyday of every week.

How do you maintain such an excellent safety performance?

Our safety performance is determined by the guys out in the yard. Every day they are looking after each other; it’s not just a matter of you personally being safe it’s a matter of your partner / buddy being safe. As far as I’m concerned in the Scaffolding Yard Safety is paramount. This is reflected in our outstanding safety performance.

How has REACH Beyond Zero impacted on your team?

REACH Beyond Zero has instilled a safety culture within the team and the wider company. To work safe becomes a matter of habit; safe in the Yard, safe on site, safe at home.
