Stork reaches out to improve safety engagement

Stork held its second REACH Beyond Zeroing Out forum as the company aims to improve safety engagement with its employee community, customers and wider oil and gas industry.

More than 70 business leaders and safety experts from across the UK attended the thought leadership event which was held at the Marcliffe Hotel, Aberdeen.

Erik-Jan Bijvank, SVP – UK & Africa, said; “REACH Beyond Zeroing Out delivered on our key aims for the event – to engage with our peers, generate meaningful discussion and develop new relationships to improve safety. We had an excellent line-up of keynote speakers and the event was a great success.

Keynote presentations from the Step Change in Safety, TAQA and On-Purpose discussed workforce engagement and breaking down ‘tribalism’ on installations, whereby an Operator and contractor organisations operate to different safety programmes on the same worksite. Sharing safety data, knowledge and experience was identified as a key action to achieving this and working safer together.

The topic of safety reps also generated significant discussion, with a general consensus that the role was important to driving safety improvements and this could be recognised with additional training, development and responsibilities for the nominated individuals.

Bijvank continued: “Workforce engagement is proven to improve safety and makes clear business sense, however, if it was quick fix then our people would not still be getting hurt.  It is critical that we continue to engage with our employee community across our business. From safety reps to the senior leadership team, we have to take ownership for safety and engaging with our colleagues, peers and wider industry to improve safety together”

Les Linklater, team lead for Step Change in Safety presented on the industry association’s workforce engagement toolkit and said: “We believe that workforce engagement is critical to driving improvements in safety performance at a worksite, and breaking down the barriers between different organisations on an installation is key to achieving this. Open forums, such as REACH Beyond Zeroing Out, are important as they facilitate engagement between senior management and this interaction needs to be replicated across the workforce.”
