Inspection project at coal-fired power plant in Malaysia

Project Description

Stork Gears & Services was invited for the inspection of ten coal mill gearboxes at a power plant in Malaysia. This plant is a large coal fired power station with generating capacity of 2400 MW. Coal is prepared for use by crushing the rough coal into very small pieces by pulverizers/powder coal mills. The coal powder is mixed with primary combustion air which transports the coal to the furnace. Please notice the illustration below for a (simple) preview of a coal-fired installation.

Each unit exists of 5 coal mill gearboxes which can supply coal to the furnace at 200 tons per hour. The project involved the complete inspection of ten gearboxes in order to determine their condition. This inspection will help the customer to time and prioritize his maintance in the most effficient manner.

At coal fired power plants, the energy stored in coal is finally converted in electrical energy for continuous use and distribution across a wide geographic area. The coal is pulverized by crushing in the coal mills.
