Stork’s Sand Management capability provides a safe, efficient and environment-friendly method for sand removal and treatment.
Stork’s innovative AOD system fluidises and removes sand from live production separators without causing undue process disturbance or production loss. The system safely and efficiently removes, cleans and then diskharge the sand to sea with no deferred production.
The units remove sand from a live production separator at up to 60 bar operating pressure and recycle produced water back to the separator while diskharging recovered oil to the drains system. The unique hydrocyclone-configured AODATEX is compliant for zone 2 hazardous areas, and needs less physical exertion and less confined space entry – providing a positive impact on health and safety.
Stork’s supervisors, fitters and operators have all completed an in house equipment-specific training course and are assessed under the company’s OPITO approved competency program. Many of the personnel began desanding with first generation equipment and are now operating second- and third-generation systems, giving them strong product knowledge and experience.
For a typical project we supply a five-strong offshore crew supported by an onshore Operations Manager dedicated to desanding operations, and our plant division which maintains and prepares the equipment for use.
Stork’s AOD system not only provides a safer alternative for sand removal by avoiding unnecessary confined space entries and exposure to hazardous substances, it also reduces costs by avoiding the requirement for expensive shutdowns while improving separator efficiency while reducing maintenance requirements.
Sand Wash Units
Using in-house designed sand wash units, Stork ensures any offshore sand disposals are in line with environmental diskharge limits while eliminating the cost of onshore waste clean-up.
The sand wash unit removes oil contamination from recovered solids to less than 1% oil content prior to overboard diskharge. Accurate measurement of waste and optimum chemical dosing via suction pump line is achieved using volumetric analysis.
Environment-friendly systems account for situations when zero diskharges are allowed and Stork can remove and clean the sand offshore, diskharging into skips. The costs of onshore clean-up are therefore minimized.
Using a thermal imaging technology, Stork carries out surveys producing images of invisible infrared or heat radiation to determine sand accumulation in a separator, identifying problem areas such as blockages and flow restrictions. On completion, all images are captured and recorded within a survey report providing full recommendations and solutions. On completion of desanding, further inspections are carried out to prove effectiveness.

Stork completed 11 workscopes between 2009 & 2012 to complete online desanding on an FPSO’s First Stage Separator (20-VA-100) using the state of the art, Advanced Online Desander (AOD) Skid.
