The life-saving rules have been created to keep our people safe. We have analyzed the activities which hurt us the most and developed the life-saving rules to help prevent injuries in the future.

They are an indicator of high-risk activity that we’re involved in and provide a framework and guidance for safe operations.

  • 1. What are the life-saving rules and how many are there?

    The life-saving rules have been developed to keep our people safe while executing high risk activities. There are 10 life-saving rules and they cover operations with confined space, driving, electricity, equipment and plant, excavations, hazardous release, lifting and rigging, manual handling, safe systems of work, and working at height.


  • 2. Why are the life-saving rules important?

    The life-saving rules have been created to keep our people safe and create a common safety culture. They are an indicator of high-risk activity that we’re involved in and provide a framework and guidance for safe operations.


  • 3. What are the life-saving rules based on?

    The life-saving rules are based on an analysis of safety incidents within the Stork business from recent years. We have analyzed the activities which hurt us the most and developed the life-saving rules to help prevent injuries in the future. The life-saving rules align with Fluor’s Life Critical initiative, which is one of the most important aspects of Fluor’s HSE Management System.


  • 4. Some of the life-saving rules, like excavation, don’t apply to the work I do. Do I still have to follow the rules?

    All life-savings rules must be complied with as and when related activity is being carried out. While some may not apply to your work activity at this moment in time, you will receive training on all the rules.


  • 5. When will the life-saving rules be launched?

    The life-saving rules will be launched in January 2017.


  • 6. How will the life-saving rules be rolled out in Stork?

    The life-saving rules will be rolled out through HSSEQ communications at site, as well as training for all Stork employees.


  • 7. What will happen if I don’t follow the life-saving rules?

    The life-saving rules are developed to keep you and your colleagues’ safe, so we expect that they will be followed all the time. However, if you choose not to follow the life-saving rules, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.


  • 8. We have existing processes and procedures that cover life-saving rule activity, like working at height. Which one do I follow?

    You must follow all local, site, corporate and client safety rules. Stork’s life-saving rules will not conflict with similar rules as they are designed to align with local management systems and regulatory requirements.


  • 9. Our Client has different life-saving rules at the site I work. Which rules do I follow?

    You must follow all safety rules implemented on your site. Your HSSEQ department is typically responsible for streamlining the rules.


  • 10. I work in an office. Do the life-saving rules also apply to me?

    The life-saving rules are applicable to anyone working for Stork, directly or as a (sub)contractor, on Stork or Client premises or locations.


  • 11. Will I receive training on the life-saving rules? If so, when?

    Yes, all employees will be trained in the life-saving rules by the end of 2017. More information on the training schedule for your location will be communicated by your local HSSEQ representative.


  • 12. We currently have REACH Beyond Zero operating rules and house rules. What happens with them?

    The ten life-saving rules will replace our existing REACH Beyond Zero operating rules. The house rules still apply and can be tailored to specific site requirements.
