EU Climate Kic supports Stork research on scaling-up the production of green hydrogen
Hydrogen is the new buzz in sustainable energy. But what is the real opportunity of introducing large scale green hydrogen production? To answer this question Stork initiated a research project named “Green Electrons to Green Hydrogen”. EIT Climate-KIC, the EU Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC), working to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon economy, acknowledges the importance of this study by awarding Stork with an extra funding to execute this study.
Hydrogen can be a key ingredient to reach carbon-neutrality and an important solution for the whole of North-West Europe. In the Netherlands, all ingredients for a hydrogen economy are present. Large quantities of wind energy in the North Sea that can be converted into hydrogen. There are a number of large industrial complexes that need hydrogen; there is a usable national gas infrastructure available. And finally, there is a great deal of expertise linked to hydrogen. All ingredients to turn the Netherlands into the internationally leading hydrogen country.
To explore the opportunity of introducing large scale green hydrogen production for fuel, feedstock and storage for transport, electricity generation, the industry and built environment, Stork initiated a research project named “Green Electrons to Green Hydrogen” (GE2H2). The study also intends to leverage the partnerships and connections in the value chain to drive awareness and action. The study is started in June 2019. Results are expected to delivered before the year end.
Funding by EIT Climate-KIC
EIT Climate-KIC is a Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC), working to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon economy. Supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, they identify and support innovation that helps society mitigate and adapt to climate change.
EIT Climate-KIC has reviewed the Stork proposal and commented: “This Pathfinder project is aiming to identify barriers in the uptake of green hydrogen as an energy or material resource. Not only identifying barriers for growth but developing a roadmap for the green hydrogen systems transformation. The outcomes of this project will give a clear insight on next steps to create a systems transformation making green hydrogen an important resource for energy and more. “
Consequently, Climate-KIC has awarded Stork with an extra funding to execute this GE2H2 study.
