Harvesting hydro energy is a key pillar of the energy transition: it’s ability to provide 24/7 electricity sets it apart from wind and solar. However, hydropower stations have a lot of massive rotating equipment and therefore it requires reliable and cost effective operations and maintenance to achieve low cost, 24/7 electricity.
We have the field-proven O&M experience to help drive down costs related to hydropower, whether related to dams, tidal or in surface water management situations. Thanks to our combined knowledge of turbines, gears, generators and related E&I, we can often take single point of responsibility to inspect, overhaul and repair your hydropower train. This reduces cost and unburdens you of tedious interface management, allowing you to focus on your core business.
Whether heat treating massive bifurcations (>5m diameter, >8 cm thickness, 1 mile underground), providing inspection or totally refurbishing generators (e.g. stators, rotor poles), we are ready to support hydro-power installations. In one such case we renewed the compete stator winding of a 117 GWh generator. This consisted of 304 pieces of high voltage roebel bars and the complete rotor winding of 14 poles. Additionally, the existing excitation was changed to a completely new static system.
We help support tidal power installations from both an E&I and turbine maintenance point of view. Because these projects are often still in the experimental phase, a lot of collaborative thinking is required to get such facilities up & running. New generation, fish friendly turbines, 4 quadrant frequency drives and simplified designs are slowly but surely offsetting the challenges related to varying flows, marine growth, fouling and corrosion. We are ready to be your partner to make it happen.
In order to extract water in the rainy season and to generate electricity when letting water flow back during dry periods, we design, manufacture and install pump-turbines, along with all related E&I systems. Apart from being energy efficient, it operates at a low RPM in combination with a fish-friendly hydraulic design as per NEN 8775:2020 allowing fish to swim up/downstream during pumping and generating power.
